For a moment, the exchange had echoes of the 1990s—back when Bill Clinton famously faced questions about a relationship with a young White House intern. But this time the setting was not a press conference or a grand jury investigation. It was a tense congressional hearing examining leadership inside the United States Department of Homeland Security. The hearing veered into controversy when a lawmaker confronted Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem with unusually blunt questions about the role and influence of longtime political operative Corey Lewandowski within the department.
What began as oversight about decision-making and authority quickly escalated into a pointed and uncomfortable line of questioning that caught the room’s attention.
The lawmaker began by stressing the weight of the job Noem holds. As head of Homeland Security, she oversees agencies responsible for protecting the United States from threats ranging from terrorism to natural disasters. Decisions made by the department’s leadership, the lawmaker argued, can have life-or-death consequences.
Because of that responsibility, the congresswoman said, the judgment of the secretary and her senior advisers must be beyond question.
She then turned to Lewandowski, asking why the political consultant appeared to be functioning as a kind of “de facto chief of staff” within the department.
Lewandowski, a former campaign manager for Donald Trump, has long been a controversial figure in American politics. Critics in Congress say his presence inside the department has grown unusually influential despite his lack of government experience in national security, law enforcement, or military operations.
According to the lawmaker, Lewandowski has allegedly taken actions that would normally fall within the authority of the Homeland Security secretary herself.

Among the claims raised during the hearing were reports that Lewandowski helped push for the firing of a FEMA administrator and played a role in promoting a controversial detention project sometimes referred to as “Alligator Alcatraz,” which critics say has become a costly legal and political headache for the state of Florida.
The congresswoman also questioned whether Lewandowski has had influence over the review and approval of large contracts and federal grants—another responsibility typically reserved for senior officials confirmed by the Senate.
Homeland Security, she noted, oversees critical agencies including the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the United States Secret Service, and United States Customs and Border Protection. Given the scale and sensitivity of those responsibilities, she asked what qualifications Lewandowski possessed that justified such access and influence.
“Does he have national security experience?” she asked. “Military experience? Law enforcement experience?”
Her answer to each question was blunt: no.
Instead, she described Lewandowski primarily as a lobbyist and political operative, arguing that his lack of background in homeland security raises concerns for lawmakers and constituents alike—especially for communities still waiting for federal disaster relief funding.
Pointing to media reports describing a close relationship between Kristi Noem and Corey Lewandowski, the congresswoman pressed the issue further. She cited reporting suggesting the relationship had raised concerns in political circles and even made Donald Trump uncomfortable, allegedly contributing to Lewandowski not being formally installed as Noem’s chief of staff.
Then the hearing took an even sharper turn. Sydney Kamlager-Dove asked the secretary directly whether, at any point during her tenure, she had been in a sexual relationship with Lewandowski—a question that instantly shifted the tone of the room and drew audible reactions from those present.
Noem pushed back immediately, calling the question “tabloid garbage” and expressing shock that it was being raised in a congressional committee.
She emphasized that Lewandowski serves as a special government employee connected to the White House, noting that thousands of individuals hold similar designations across the federal government.
But the lawmaker insisted the issue was not about personal gossip. Instead, she framed the question as one about judgment, potential conflicts of interest, and national security.
She argued that if a top official were involved in a romantic relationship with a subordinate who held significant influence over policy decisions, it could create serious ethical concerns.
“It’s not about your sex life,” she said. “It’s about your judgment.”
The congresswoman also warned that the stakes for the department are enormous. The Department of Homeland Security was created in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks to coordinate the country’s response to threats at home and abroad.
Internal bulletins, she noted, have warned law enforcement agencies that global conflicts and geopolitical tensions could inspire lone-actor attacks or cyber activity within the United States.

For the roughly 260,000 people working under the department’s umbrella, she argued, confidence in leadership is essential.
“They need to know that the person at the top is making decisions clearly,” she said, “and that those decisions are truly hers.”
Before yielding her time, the congresswoman attempted to enter several news articles into the congressional record detailing controversies surrounding Lewandowski and leadership turmoil within the department.
The chair allowed some documents to be entered while others drew objections from members of the committee.
The exchange ended, but the questions raised about Lewandowski’s influence inside Homeland Security—and the judgment of its leadership—are unlikely to fade quickly.
