Donald Trump has voiced strong disapproval over a recent ad from Vote Common Good, which encourages wives of his supporters to consider voting for Kamala Harris in private. The ad, featuring a voiceover by actress Julia Roberts, suggests that women “can vote any way you want, and no one will ever know.”
Speaking on Fox News on Saturday, Trump criticized the ad, questioning the idea that women would need to keep their political choices hidden from their spouses. “The wives and husbands, I don’t think that’s the way they deal,” Trump said. “Can you imagine a wife not telling her husband who she’s voting for? Even in a bad relationship, you’re going to tell your husband.”
A recent YouGov poll found that 1 in 8 women cast their votes differently from their partners without disclosing it, but this hasn’t prevented some MAGA-supporting men from expressing frustration over the concept. Fox anchor Jesse Watters highlighted this sentiment on air, inadvertently underscoring the ad’s point by comparing his wife supporting a different candidate to “having an affair.”
This reaction aligns with former President Trump’s recent criticism of the ad, which encourages women to vote freely. His disapproval comes shortly after he pledged to protect women “whether the women like it or not.”
“I’m so disappointed in Julia Roberts. She’s going to look back on that and cringe, thinking, ‘Did I really say that?’” Trump said in a call to the show. “It doesn’t reflect well on her relationship, though I’m sure it’s great. Wives and husbands—that’s just not how they operate. Can you imagine a wife not telling her husband who she’s voting for? Even in a bad relationship, you’re still going to tell him. It’s a ridiculous concept. So stupid.”
The ad, narrated by Julia Roberts and produced by the progressive evangelical group Vote Common Good, portrays a woman discreetly casting her vote for Kamala Harris despite her husband’s preference for Trump. Roberts’ narration underscores the privacy of the ballot, stating, “In the one place in America where women still have a right to choose, you can vote any way you want, and no one will ever know,” a subtle nod to concerns over reproductive rights if Trump is reelected.
As the woman exits the booth, she joins her husband, who asks, “Did you make the right choice?” She replies, “Sure did, honey,” then shares a knowing glance with a female friend, hinting that her vote for Harris remains their shared secret.
The ad closes with Roberts reminding viewers, “Remember, what happens in the booth, stays in the booth.”
