Minnesota Governor Tim Walz delivered his first public speech on Tuesday after being chosen as Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate.
Addressing a raucous crowd in Philadelphia, Walz praised Harris, introduced himself to the public, and took shots at former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance (R-OH).
“Minnesota’s strength comes from our values—our commitment to working together, seeing past our differences, and always being willing to lend a helping hand,” he said. “These are the same values I learned on the family farm and tried to instill in my students. I took these values to Congress and the state capitol. Now, Vice President Harris and I are running to bring them to the White House.”
Walz then contrasted himself with Trump, emphasizing that the former president is a convicted felon:
“Donald Trump sees the world differently than we do. First of all, he doesn’t understand the first thing about service. He doesn’t have time for it because he’s too busy serving himself. Time and again, Trump weakens our economy to strengthen his own hand. He mocks our laws and sows chaos and division. And that’s not even mentioning his record as president. He froze in the face of the COVID crisis and drove our economy into the ground.”
And make no mistake, violent crime increased under Donald Trump—this doesn’t even include the crimes he committed.
The crowd erupted in cheers, eventually breaking into a chant of “Lock him up!” Walz extended his arms, signaling the audience to cool it.
Trump was convicted in May on 34 counts of falsifying business records in New York to conceal hush money payments related to extramarital affairs. The former president has also been indicted in three other jurisdictions.
